The Brain’s Body Podcast: The Brain Is the Body
Host by Dr. Christopher K. Slaton
The Brain’s Body Podcast (presented by Brain Talk Books) is an audio companion to Dr. Christopher K. Slaton’s Education and Science series and related titles. Using human systems science—the study of brain, body, and sense events—each episode explores “brain–body–sense experience” and the everyday message behind behavior. Grounded in Dr. Slaton’s signature framework—“The brain is the body” and “The Brain’s Body is a Learning System”—the podcast connects what happens in the body to how we live, learn, think, and respond.
Across home, school, neighborhood, and workplace networks, the show focuses on practical ways to support children, families, and professionals—especially when information processing is stressed and a parent or child is in crisis. Episodes include case discussions and listener-driven questions that model Dr. Slaton’s approach: talk to the child’s brain, not the child’s body. From big feelings and conflict to the crisis of self, listeners leave with simple language, reflection prompts, and next-step tools for improving learning, participation, and self-awareness.
Brain Talk Books is a publishing imprint of Progressive Investment Group Press established to disseminate Christopher K. Slaton’s literature in Human Systems Science, with particular attention to brain–body–sense events and their implications for learning, self-regulation, and relational dynamics. Across books and companion media, the imprint advances a structured, practice-oriented framework for interpreting behavioral communication and for supporting parents, educators, and health and human service professionals in applied settings.

Behavior is loud, but it is not always the beginning.
In this episode of The Brain’s Body Podcast, Dr. Christopher Kevin Slaton invites parents into a brain-based shift for understanding their child in the moments that matter most. When adults respond only to what they can see, they may end up talking to the body as if the body is the problem. Human Systems Science offers a different starting point: the body wears states of mind, while the brain leads the nervous system response that drives action, feeling, and thought.
This episode unpacks what “contact” really means. Contact is not only touch. It can be your words, your tone, your mood, the emotional energy you bring into the room, and the lived interaction between you and your child. Because contact enters a child’s receive path, the brain immediately begins organizing what is being sensed, felt, and focused. Even simple language can carry neural energy, shaping whether your child moves toward regulation or further escalation.
You’ll also learn the sense-feel-focus loop, a practical way to slow down, understand the lived experience beneath behavior, and respond in a way that helps the brain lead the body again. Dr. Slaton applies this process to a child affected by a major life event, where cooperation can disappear and emotions can flood the system.
If you want more connection, stronger co-regulation, and fewer power struggles, this conversation will help you begin with the brain before reacting to behavior.

Welcome To Brain Talk
SPEAKER_00Welcome to the Brain's Body Podcast. I'm Dr. Christopher Kevin Slane, your host, and let's get started.
SPEAKER_01Session one brain thinking begins with brain talk. To understand how your child thinks, learn how the brain leads the body. This is why you talk to your child's brain and not only to your child's body. The body wears states
The Body Wears States Of Mind
SPEAKER_01of mind. This is why parents are often pulled toward what they can see behavior, posture, tone, facial expression, resistance, or withdrawal. The body becomes the visible place where lived experience shows up first. But what the parent sees is not always where the child's experience begins. In human system science, the brain is the central organ of the body. The brain leads the neural response system while the body wears states of mind into visible form. This means the child's body may be showing signs of a state of mind, but the brain is still organizing contact, energy, action, feeling, and thought through brain, body, and sense messaging, the starting
What Contact Really Means
SPEAKER_01point. Contact contact is not only touch. Contact can be words, body contact, sense data, mood states, emotional energy, thought, or the lived interaction between the child and the adult. Contact enters the child's receive path as the brain begins to organize what is being sensed, felt, and focused. When a parent speaks, the words carry more than language. Words can carry neural energy. Emotion may influence thought, and thought may become a neural response to interaction. This is why brain talk begins before the parent corrects behavior. Brain talk begins when the adult learns to sense how contact is being received.
Why Behavior Is A Bad Starting Point
SPEAKER_01Why behavior cannot be the starting point? For years, many educational and parenting practices have been built around what can be seen and named as behavior. This can cause adults to look first at the body and interpret what the child is doing before sensing how the child's brain may be receiving the moment. Human system science does not ignore the body, it relocates the starting point. The body is carrying states of mind, but the brain is leading the response system. When the adult talks only to the body, the adult may respond to the surface of the state. When the adult learns to talk to the child's brain, contact can become a pathway for focus, reflection, and organization.
The Sense Feel Focus Loop
SPEAKER_01The sense, feel, focus loop. The sense-feel-focus loop is a human system science process loop. It begins when contact is received through brain, body, and sense messaging. Sense opens the receive path. Feel gives contact lived experience. Focus organizes the neural response so the brain can lead the body through brain talk. Sense receives contact. Feel forms the lived experience. Focus organizes the neural response. Together, they create the process loop where the brain leads the body and talks back through brain, body, and sense signals.
Helping After A Major Life Event
SPEAKER_01Working with a child upset by a major life event. When a child has been upset by a major life event, the body may not show clear signs of cooperation between brain and body. The child may be moving through emotional effects as contact becomes interaction between physical and neural engagement. The goal is to align the flow of emotion from sense contact with the flow of thought in received path interaction. This requires a sense of feel for the lived experience of interaction within the real-time exchanges between how the body acts and how the brain manages the flow of energy. In this moment, the adult does not begin by naming behavior. The adult begins by sensing contact, feeling the lived experience of interaction and allowing focus to form before response. Stay
